Some grass swards are open with the odd bare patch created by a mole or rabbit, others are tighter and gaps for seeds or plants need to be made either by spraying off small patches with glyphosate or using a spade to remove the turf. On the new huge meadow we are spraying glyphosate in 25cm wide bands and killing off up to 30 per cent of the grass cover. We could have used a harrow aiming to expose 50 per cent of bare soil. As soon as the grass starts to die back it is a good time to start sowing the wild flower seeds or planting the plugs.
