一To Play or to Watch[P][P]重庆市巴蜀中学英语教师 徐建军[/P][P][/P][P][ 附件 ] [/P][P]徐建军 老师的教案 [/P][P][P]To play or to watch [/P][P][/P][P]Since this is a dialogue, the most important thing is to let the students speak and to try every effort to make them use their imagination and give the audience a deep impression, which will greatly improve their self confidence in speaking English and in their future’s life. [/P][P]This dialogue is about whether to play or to watch football, which means that nearly everybody can talk, and comment on it. At the same time the dialogue talks about David Beckham and he is very successful in his career, therefore we can stimulate the students to learn form his strong points and make China’s football grow better. Absolutely there are two sides to everything. We can let the students exposed to some values besides the language, and we should not learn form his bad manners but get rid of them and make ourselves better. [/P][P]Objectives as far as language, culture awareness and tactics, etc are concerned. [/P][P]Language: learning new words and expressions during the process. [/P][P]debating on important issues. [/P][P]interview making. [/P][P]Culture: team work, patriotism [/P][P]Tactics: body languages, excellent pronunciation and intonation and easy-going personality. [/P][P]Focus: debate and interview making. [/P][P]Preparation: speech to stimulate them, give them inspiration and encouragement, and let them know I am an excellent speaker, which means everything will go on smoothly. [/P][P]Key: speech to make them encouraged, humor to make them feel relaxed, interaction to make them feel they are the boss of the class and I am just helping them. [/P][P]Caution: never make speeches all the time, and give the students more time to experience the precious moment. [/P][P]TASK 1 (five minutes before the class begins) [/P][P]Play the song THE CUP OF LIFE to make the students feel like we are in a stadium, creating an inspiring atmosphere. [/P][P]TASK 2 (the class begins, opening speech 20-35 seconds, awesome, intriguing.) [/P][P]To begins with the class, ask the students some questions which are easy to answer and quite interesting (Football is the most popular sports around the world? Do you think so, why?) [/P][P]Ask some of them to answer the questions, thus the students-centered class will be created in no time. (Walk around, make them feel I am not rigid like a puppet but active. 3-4 minutes) [/P][P]Then let them know why I like football, in a deep and humorous voice like a TV host. FOOTBALL MAKES A MAN (an ad made by myself) [/P][P]TASK 3 (introducing the new lesson, while teaching them a new word through the picture on the screen: PITCH) [/P][P]TASK 4 (listening comprehension, 6 -8minutes) [/P][P]Ask the students to close the paper and listen attentively and try to make their own judgments the five statements. (The five statements are the general ideas of the whole passage and they are not hard to answer, to make the students feel that their English is ok and that they can answer a lot of questions even though there are a lot of teachers here, and they will feel less nervous and more enthusiastic) [/P][P][P]True or false [/P][P][/P][P]1. It’s a fine day to practise football (T) [/P][P]2. According to the speaker’s mother, David Beckham has good manners (F) [/P][P]3. David Beckham is rude to his teammates (F) [/P][P]4: Both the two speakers think watching football games can improve their skills and understanding of football (F) [/P][P]5: Playing the real thing can make one a better player (T) [/P][P]( During the process do not make too much comments on them.) [/P][P]TASK 5 (reading comprehension 2 minutes) [/P][P](Since the students got the general idea, and they have talked something about it, they should move on to next phase to totally understand it in great details.) [/P][P]While students are reading, they have to know what they are going to do exactly. As there are two speakers in the dialogue and each speaker has his own points of view, the students have to find out what those points are and underline the new words and expressions at the same time. [/P][P]TASK 6 (language points and discussion 14-16 minutes) [/P][P]Let the students tell the spectators what those points are; try to ask more students, because different people have different ideas. [/P][P]After they have talked about all the points about A, I should present the reference answers on the screen, the same with B. Next step is to deal with the so-called language points. All the new words and expressions and the useful ones are in black. [/P][P]Ask the students to guess what those new words and expressions mean and most probably some students who have a larger vocabulary can figure them out; if not, I am going to help them, using body language and other means to make them understand better and remember longer. [/P][P]Next is brainstorm. Undoubtedly some are for A, some are against A, and some are against B and some are for B. Divide the class into two groups, each representing A or B, and change the seats according to their roles at the same time. [/P]
[P][P]A’s points [/P][P][/P][P]1: prefers to practice [/P][P]2: Beckham, no manners, cares nobody but himself [/P][P]3: Beckham behaves very badly [/P][P]4: Beckham should be more careful about the way he behaves [/P][P]5: prefers to do the real thing [/P][P] [/P][P] [/P][P][P]B’s points [/P][P][/P][P]1: stays indoors, watching football on TV. [/P][P]2: loves Beckham’s football skill, a good example to follow ( team work) [/P][P]3: Beckham plays fair [/P][P]4: watching playing can improve his kill and understanding of football [/P][P]5: prefers strategy to fitness plan [/P]
[P]Let them discuss why they are for A, or against B, and vise versa. Ask them to speak it out. The students are terribly good. I should give them more time to speak, but I have to comment on them and correct the mistakes they make at the same time. To stimulate them I have to walk around and use my body language to make them feel better. [/P][P]While this is going on I can ask some spontaneous questions which are very interesting to answer, therefore the whole audience can know that my spoken English is excellent and the students will cooperate better when they know that my English is somewhat close to native speakers. [/P][P]TASK 7 (role play 7-10 minutes) [/P][P]Since the title is To play or to Watch, and what’s more the dialogue talks about David Beckham, create an interview and the students will be pretty much interested in the roles. [/P][P][P]To play or to watch? [/P][P][/P][P][P]Interview: How to be successful [/P][P][/P][P]Role A: a reporter Role B: David Beckham [/P][P]In sports, in life…and many more … [/P][P]Using the following words and expressions is not a bad idea [/P][P]improve, favorite, no (good) manners , [/P][P]care about, behave, follow one’s example [/P][P]play fair, fitness, strategy [/P][P]skills, team work [/P][P]This part is very important. It not only consolidates the language points the students learnt in the dialogue and the way to express their ideas, but more importantly it gives them the chance to let their imagination run free and talk and talk, totally enjoying the precious freedom in learning a foreign language. [/P][P]TASK8 (homework 1 minute) [/P][P]The dialogue is concerning about China’s football. What should we do as Chinese? Give the students more time to think about it … [/P][P]Homework [/P][P]Composition [/P][P]The future of China’s football: TO ? OR TO ?[/P]

[P][/P]
